Do you suffer from inflammation throughout your body? Interested in healthy foods that are known to reduce inflammation in the body? We’ve talked about spices and various other foods but today we wanted to talk about nature’s candy: fruit. Many people hear that fruit contains sugar and that they should avoid it, however, this isn’t exactly the case. Sugar in fruit is not added sugar, you shouldn’t overeat it, however, two or three servings of fruit a day or fine. Today, Dawn Potter Acupuncture in Clearwater, Florida is discussing the best anti-inflammatory fruits you should add to your diet. Have questions? Interested in nutritional guidance? Feel free to schedule your free 15 minute consultation with us.

Cherries

Research on cherries (including sweet and tart) has shown that they can actually lower inflammatory blood proteins and have effects comparable to ibuprofen. Cherries are even recommended for those that suffer from arthritis and inflammation of joints. Anthocyanins and polyphenolic compounds stop potential free radicals from damaging cells and can also improve overall sleep by increasing melatonin levels in the body (proper sleep can greatly reduce inflammation).

Strawberries

We tend to hear about oranges when talking about Vitamin C but did you know a cup of strawberries contains 100% of your recommended daily Vitamin C? Vitamin C has been shown to improve functioning of the immune system and reduction of inflammation. Next time you want a sweet treat, try strawberries! Other berries such as blackberries, blueberries, cranberries, etc. are great options as well. You can even buy mixed berries in the frozen section at most stores to enjoy all year round.

Apples

You’ve probably heard “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” before, right? While this may not be completely factual, apples can be extremely beneficial for you. They contain soluble fiber known as pectin, known as a prebiotic. These feed good microbes in the gut, improving your overall immune system and reducing inflammation throughout the body.

Oranges

Oranges are often regarded for their high levels of vitamin C but they also contain B vitamins, calcium, fiber and anti-inflammatory phytochemicals such as flavonoids and carotenoids. Other citrus fruits such as limes, lemons and even grapefruit are other wonderful options. If you take medication, always be sure to make sure there is no grapefruit interaction as this is a common thing.

Kiwis

Along with the other fruits on this list, Kiwi is high in vitamin C, antioxidants and enzymes that can help reduce inflammatory responses in the body. You can get the regular kiwifruit or opt for the golden ones that can be eaten whole (peel included). Both are great additions to healthy snacking options for your home.

About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that utilizes tiny, thin needles and specific points on the body. These tiny needles are inserted into specific points that are connected to each other by what are known as “meridians”. It is believed that these pathways help with the flow of qi (chee) in the body. When not properly functioning, this can result in various symptoms and ailments.

Acupuncture for Allergies?

When it comes to the treatment of allergies in the United States, oral medications, nasal sprays, and other treatments are often recommended. While these treatment options can provide temporary relief, they also tend to have side effects. With acupuncture, many patients can improve the effectiveness of these alternative treatment options or even stop them altogether.

Acupuncture treatment for allergies typically involves bi-weekly or weekly appointments over the course of several weeks to months. In some cases, follow-up treatments may be necessary.

Chinese Herbal Medicine for Allergies?

Along with acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and diet may also help those who suffer from allergies. These herbs and dietary changes can impact histamine in the body, resulting in less or no symptoms at all.

Can Massage Improve Allergy Symptoms?

Massage can improve allergy symptoms. Certain massage techniques can improve lymphatic drainage. This can help to increase waste filtering and removal.

About Herbal Therapy

For centuries, herbal therapy has been used in China as a fundamental therapy for both acute and chronic health conditions. Much like acupuncture, Chinese herbal therapy can be used to address a variety of conditions, symptoms and complaints a patient may have. The ultimate goal of Chinese Herbal Therapy is to help the patient regain balance and wellness, strengthening the body’s resistance to ailments. Chinese herbs may also be used as preventive medicine.

Chinese herbal medicine can be useful in the rehabilitation of both acute and chronic diseases. Oftentimes, Chinese herbs are recommended when a patient has multiple symptoms or ailments that are hard to pinpoint. For those that have exhausted other medical treatment options, Chinese herbs may be a wonderful treatment option. Chinese herbal medicine may also be recommended to counteract the side effects of prescription medications or treatments.

What to Expect

During a typical appointment for Traditional Chinese Medicine, your practitioner will provide an examination, assessing your overall health and discussing your health history. The examination is useful for identifying any imbalances or blockages in the body. If your practitioner notices any imbalances, a treatment plan will be created, often combining Chinese herbs with other treatment modalities.
