Acupuncture is most famous in the U.S. for reduction and eliminate of
pain. Indeed, acupuncture is often unsurpassed in its ability to manage pain and inflammation. And, it
accomplishes this without the detrimental
side-effects of pain-killing narcotics, steroids, and
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID’s).
In Oriental medicine, pain, neuropathy, numbness & tingling is considered to be a local stagnation or blockage in the flow of energy (Qi). This can be likened to a kink in a garden hose: the Qi flowing in the energy meridians is like water in a hose. If the hose gets a kink, the water will not flow well and backs up. In the body, Qi blockage and back-up causes pain. Acupuncture treatment for pain aims to unblock the flow of energy, (unkink the hose), and draw the excess build-up of energy away from the area, which then relieves the pain.
Depending on the style of acupuncture used, during a treatment for pain, needles may be placed locally (on or near the site of pain), and/or distally (far away from the site of pain), usually in the arms, legs, hands or feet. Dawn uses both Traditional Chinese Acupuncture and the Tan Balance Method of acupuncture to treat pain: Traditional Chinese Acupuncture places needles both locally and distally, and may include the use of low voltage electricity on the needles, as well as local massage, cupping, gua sha and/or moxabustion to reduce pain and inflammation. The Tan Balance Method of acupuncture doesn’t use local acupuncture; it only uses carefully selected distal acu-points to affect the pain relief, and may include local massage, cupping, gua sha, or moxabustion.
